Ground Velocity Indicator

The indicator (Figure 1-11-2) has an inner non-linear fixed scale graduated from 0 to 90 degrees port and starboard indicating the helicopter drift angle. There are two digital displays located on the bottom part of the indicator. The right hand display indicates the true track of the aircraft from 0 to 360 degrees unless the groundspeed is less than 10 knots. The left hand display indicates groundspeeds of 0 to 199 knots. Negative groundspeeds are indicated as speeds decreasing from 200 knots.

A red annunciator marked “MAL”, illuminates when the doppler system detects a fault or during selftest. An amber annunciator marked “MEM” illuminates when the doppler system is in memory mode because of a lack of useable signal or during self-test.

The indicator also has a dimmer control marked “DIM” on the top left corner of the instrument to control the brightness of the annunciators and the digital displays, whereas the aircraft lighting circuits controls the brightness of the instrument face. The TRACK switch on the top right corner of the indicator will blank the TRACK display when placed in OFF position.
